第３０講 理由を表す接続詞 since, because, as, for
＜学生の英作文１＞
Since my father died 14 years ago, my mother single-handedly raised three children, including me.
＜問題点＞
従位接続詞"since"には「～以降」＜期間の始点＞と「～なので」＜理由＞の２つの意味があるため、文意があいまいになっている。
①「父が１４年前に亡くなってから、母は私を含めて３人の子供を独りで育ててきてる」
②「父が１４年前に亡くなったので、母は私を含めて３人の子供を独りで育ててきている」
①であればsinceが表す「１４年前から現在に至るまで」と、主節過去形動詞のraisedと整合性がない
sinceは現在の状況も含むので、現在完了の"has raised"または現在完了進行形の"has been raising"しか合わない
②の理由を表すsinceは「読む側がすでに分かっていること」を持ち出すときに用いる
例文の文脈では新情報を持ち出す"because"を使う
①と同じ理由で現在完了の"has raised"または現在完了進行形の"has been raising"しか合わない
＜添削例＞
期間を表したい場合
①Since my father died 14 years ago, my mother has single-handedly raised [been single-handedly raising] three children, including me.
理由を表したい場合
②Because my father died 14 years ago, my mother has single-handedly raised [been single-handedly raising] three children, including me.
＜発展添削例＞
①と②は「母は今も依然として子育てを続けている」ことを前提としている
子育てが過去に終わっている場合
英文②のhas raised [been raising]を過去形の"raised"とする
英文①has raised [been raising]を過去形の"raised"とする
従位接続詞をafterに書き直す
①After my father died 14 years ago, my mother...raised...
（父が１４年前に亡くなってから、母は…育てた）
②Because my father died 14 years ago, my mother...raised...
（父が１４年前に亡くなったので、母は…育てた）
＜理由を示す接続詞＞
従位接続詞"as"、等位接続詞"for"も文法的には可能だが、学生の意図した文意（「～だから」）には合わない
③As my father died 14 years ago, my mother has single-handedly raised [been single-handedly raising]....
「読む側がすでに分かっていること」を理由として持ち出す場合の接続詞"as"
④My mother has single-handedly raised [been single-handedly raising]..., for may father died 14 years ago.
理由それ自体がかなり補足的な感じの印象を与える
＜学生の英作文２＞
I think the history of dance is very important for a dancer. Because a dancer who knows the history can enjoy dancing more.
because 以下は主節のない＜従位節＞に過ぎない

＜主節＞をつけた例
