France – Then and Now
This picture was painted in 1876. There are many Japanese images in it. For example, you can see a kimono and many Japanese fans. However, it was not painted a Japanese artist. It was painted by the French artist, Claude Monet.
In the middle of the 19th century, Japanese Ukiyoe shocked French artists. Monet was among them. He was fascinated by Ukiyoe prints and collected more than 200 of them. He studied ukiyoe and painted this picture. Japanese art has influenced French artists since this period.
Today young French people experience Japanese art in new ways. Many French bookstores sell DRAGON BALL, NATUTO and so on. These manga are new and interesting to young French people. Characters’ faces clearly express their feeling. Their movements are shown in many ways. The stories are simple and clear. For these reasons, manga has become very popular in the last few decades.
In these ways, French people have enjoyed Japanese art for hundreds of years. Maybe you know where to find examples of French culture in Japan. If you do, please contact me at my blog.
