程度を表す不定詞の形式(不定詞の副詞的用法)
too (形容詞・副詞) to ~ 「あまりに( )で~するいことができない」
(形容詞・副詞)enough to ~ 「~するには十分( )だ」
so (形容詞・副詞) as to ~ 「~するほど( )だ」
≒so (形容詞・副詞) that … 「とても( )なので…だ」
【例文】
1.It is too cold to swim in the sea.
=It is so cold that we cannot swim in the sea.
2.That curry was too hot (for me) to eat.
=That curry was so hot that I could not eat it.
3.It is too far to walk.
=It is so far that we cannot walk.
4.It was hot enough to go swimming.
=It was so hot that we could go swimming.
5.He is rich enough to buy a Prsche.
=He is so rich that he can buy a Porsche.
6.It is close enough to go on foot.
(歩いて行けるくらい近い)
=It is so close that we can go on foot.
7.She was so kind (as) to show me around the town.…ややかたい表現
=She was so kind that she showed me around the town.…that節内は時制の呼応
(彼女は親切にも私に街中を案内してくれました)
≒It was kind of her to show me aroud the town.
be動詞+不定詞の形式(不定詞の形容詞的用法)
(be) to ~ (これからする)予定・義務/命令・(不)可能・運命・意図を表す
【例文】
8.The president it to visit Japan in November.…公式の予定等を表すかしこまった表現
cf."The next meeting it to take place in Italy."
9.New students are to attend the orientation session.…規則/強い命令(第三者が課す義務)、話者の意思による義務は通常should/mustで表す
10.Not a soul was to be seen on the street.
(通りには人っ子ひとり見られなかった)
soul=personの意、否定語を伴う場合が多い
to be 過去分詞<受動態>で可能(不可能)を表す
11.She was never to see him again.
(彼女は二度と彼に会えない運命にあった)
過去形で小説の中などで多く見られる表現
cf."He was never to return his hometown."
