Unit 16 Is nuclear energy safe for earthquake-prone Japan?

Japan is a major industrial county with a population avobe 100 million.  I wonder if people realize just how much energy it takes to keep such a country running. Lacking abundant fossil fuel deposits, we need nuclear energy to play an important role in meeting our energy requirements. The Fukushima accident was a disaster, but it ultimately came down to human error. I am furious about the lax safety standards at the plant, every time I think about it. But that doesn't mean we should shut down our nuclear program.  Rather, what it means is that we should increase inspections, increase  training, and increase penalties for infractions. People working at the plants face the greatest risks. You would think that even if they can't be bothered to think about the safety of the country, they would want to do whatever it takes to protect themselves!

come down to:結果的に

infraction:違反

You would think that...:(仮定)「普通は…

be bothered to ...:わざわざ~する

Japan is uniquely aware of the horrors of radiation. As the only country ever to be attacked with nuclear weapons, our position is unique. Furthermore, as a country that experiences more than 10% of the planet's eathquakes, we are doubly unique. Therefore, I am a big 'NO' when it comes to nuclear enery. It isn't worth it. When the Fukushima meltdown happened, I was traumatized. It felt like the monster that destoryed Hiroshima and Nagasaki had awoken to do more damege to my country. I still live in fear of the next accident being far worse. There have to be otehr ways to supply our energy needs without threatening our lives. Japan is one of the world's top enginearing countries. Surely we have the ability to prodyce safe, sustainable and renewable energy. What we need is the political will to do so.

I believe that Japan has not been cautious enough in its adoption of nuclear power. It is obviously risky to build nuclear powe plants on an island archipelago the  experiences frequent earthquakes. On the other hand, one thing that many people don't reralize is tha tnuclear energy in envolving, with producers putting increasing safety at the top of their priorities. We aren't there yet, but I believe the day will soon arrive when nuclear energy is among the safest enery options available. Certainly safer than offshore drilling. Just think of all the horrendous oil spills that happen far too often. And even oil spills have become less common due to increased safety innovations implemented by the fossil fuel industry. Nuclear energy is a renewable energy tha has great potential; a potential tha can be fully realized once it has become safer.

It is obviously risky to...:することは明らかに危険を伴う
