[あの頃のレコード(特別編)] ”American Standard" (James Taylor, 2020) SIDE D
ジャームズ・テイラーさんの最新作は、アメリカのスタンダード曲ばかりのカヴァー集。当方所有のレコードは45回転2枚組で、1面ずつ紹介してきました。本日は最後のD面。
3曲収録です。いずれも古いミュージカルの曲。
1は『ショーボート』、2はミュージカルそのものは不発でしたが楽曲がスタンダードになった『ペーパームーン』、3は『オクラホマ』からの曲です。
D面はバックのコーラスが素晴らしく、何度も聴き返したくなる曲ばかりです。
ジェームズ・テイラーさんは1948年3月12日生まれ、御年73歳なので、さすがにオリジナル曲の創作スペースは遅くなったものの、気の合ったミュージシャン(それも超一流の)と、スタンダードな曲のアレンジを楽しみ、アコースティックな音を追求していく姿勢は、シンガーソングライターとしての理想の老い方かも知れません。

"It's Only a Paper Moon" is a popular song published in 1933 with music by Harold Arlen and lyrics by Yip Harburg and Billy Rose.[1] It was originally titled "If You Believed in Me," but later went by the more popular title "It's Only a Paper Moon."[2] The song was written for an unsuccessful 1932 Broadway play called The Great Magoo that was set in Coney Island.
3. "The Surrey with the Fringe on Top"

"The Surrey with the Fringe on Top" is a show tune from the 1943 Rodgers and Hammerstein musical Oklahoma!.
