CHAPTER 3-4 「名詞節」もつくる従属接続詞

(that/if/whether)


従属接続詞は副詞節をつくる

(that/if/whether)は副詞節と名詞節(that sv)(=名詞のかたまり)をつくる


3-4-1 接続詞thatの基本


[基本情報]

①主語になる

That she will come here is certain.

=It is certain that she will come here.


②目的語になる

I know that he is unmarried.


③補語になる

The problem is that she lacks common sense.


④同格(名詞と同格になる)

the fact that she stole the money


[詳細説明]

②目的語になる


[カクシン]that節が他動詞の目的語になるときの動詞は「認識・伝達」の意味を持つ


I venture that the price of land in Yokohama will go up in the next few years.


venture:「あえて~と述べる・思い切って~と言う」


He tweeted that he would delete his Twitter account.


tweet:「ツイッター上で言う」



③補語になる

be that ~

(※副詞節を作るbeceuseを使わない)


in the winter of 2021 the number of people who tot the flu was much lower than tha year before. 

The reason is that everyone was being very careful to wash their hands, wear a mask, and sanitize surfeces.


[+α]The reason is because~という形(because節の名詞節的な使用)

口語では使用例あり


Just because ~ doesn't  mean...「~だからといって、…ということにはならない」

because節が主語(名詞節)の使用例は可

thatの省略


①目的語になる場合(省略可) I know (that) he is busy.

②主語になる場合(省略不可)

③補語になる場合(原則省略不可) The fact is (that) SV.

3-4-2 同格のthat


同格のthat:名詞節をつくるthatが、ある特定の名詞を説明する


the fact that she passed the examination

「彼女が試験に合格したという事実」


Many parents are worried by the fact that university tutiion has been rising steadily in recent years.

steadily:絶えず



[+α]関係代名詞thatとの区別

同格のthat(接続詞):thatの後ろには完全な文(sv)

関係代名詞のthat:thatの後ろには不完全は文(sやoが欠けた文)


関係代名詞thatの例文

The fact that was revealed this morning will have a big impact on the case.

同格のthatをとる名詞は「事実・認識・可能性」という意味を表す名詞に限られる

名詞は「~という」とその内容を示すthat節が続けられる

※個々の名詞の例は省略


①fact(事実・こと)

②news(知らせ)

③remark(一言、発言)

⑥feeling(気持ち)


The rumor that Ms. Okamoto would quit and start working for a competitor appears not to be true.


The spokesperson said something to the effect that the negotiations are still ongoing.


THe business plan is based on the assumption that production will become more efficient in the near future.

「名詞+前置詞+the fact that~」

Many people in this area refuse to vaccinate their children despite the fact that vaccinations help to prevent disease outbreaks.

「予防接種が病気の蔓延を防ぐのに役立つという事実があるにもかかわらず、子どもに予防接種をさせない人がこの地域には多い」
