英文法では動詞の過去形を時制以外の表現でも使用する
いずれの表現でも「距離」を表現するのに過去形（過去完了形）が使われる
動詞の過去形
（１）直接法での過去形 ← 時制で現在と過去との「距離」
（２）仮定法 ← 話し手の感情による事実と仮定との「距離」
（３）謙譲表現 ← 話し手の感情による相手との「距離」（謙り）
[仮定法の説明]mood
話し手が自分の述べている文の内容を、そのまま事実として述べる「直接法」、命令・要求を述べる「命令法」
仮想・願望・要求をあらわす場合の「仮定法」がある。
直説法（indicative mood）
仮定法（subjunctive mood）現在の時制と１つ過去にずらした時制の動詞を使う
命令法（imperative mood）
[謙譲表現]
過去形を使うことで、「相手との距離感」を作り「丁寧さ」を伝えることができること。
進行形を使って、今のお願いは一時的なものですぐに終わります、
というニュアンスを込めることで、「丁寧さ」が生まれる
Could you tell me the way to the station？
①I wonder if you could wait a moment.
②I am wondering if you could wait a moment.

4-3-1 基本的な慣用表現
[without のバリエーション]
①if it were not for ～ 「（今）～がなければ」 ※仮定法過去
②if it had not been for ～ 「（あのとき）～がなかったら」 ※仮定法過去完了
③but for ～ ※文語表現（仮定法過去・過去完了のどちらかかは文脈判断）
[例文]
If it were noto for music, our lives would be dull and boring.
※倒置の場合
if it were not for ～ → were it noto for ～
if it had not been for ～ → had it not been for ～
Had it not been for your kind help, I could not have completed the work by the deadline.

4-3-2 I wish ～ 「～ならなあ」 ※（仮定法の目印の）助動詞の過去形を使わない仮定法
[I wish には「妄想の意味」がある] 「（ありえないことを）願う」意味、仮定法でも使える
※「（ありえることを）願う」 hope, want
I wish の「後ろの形」
①I wish [that] s 過去形 「（今）～ならなあ」 ※主節wishと「同時制」の妄想
②I wish [that] s had p.p. 「（あのとき）～だったらなあ」 ※wishより「１つ前」の妄想

"I wish"は主語・時制が変わる形(SHe wishes / I wished)でも同じ使い方（同じ発想）

[発展] I wish の発展パターン (I wish s could)
"I wish"は「助動詞の過去形」が不要な仮定法だが、過去時制の助動詞の用法がある
※文法書によって「仮定法の用法」とするものもあり

①主節のVとas if 節内のｖが同時制 → as if 節のｖは過去形
②Ｖよりもｖが「１つ前の時制」 → had p.p. （※現代英語では have p.p.）
