(×)Today I think I would like to speak about the potential for long-range forecasting.
(×)For seasoning, I used salt, pepper, oregano, and so on.
[文例A]
Many people keep pets. So there are extremely many kinds of animals which are pets, I think.
And dogs are so important. However, cats are more importantthan dogs. Because cats are the most popular. These days, the cats which live with people are more than 600 million.
Many people keep pets.
So there are extremely many kinds of animals which are pets, I think.
ここでI think(~と思う)は奇妙に感じられる
And dogs are so important.
However, cats are more importantthan dogs.
Because cats are the most popular.
These days, the cats which live with people are more than 600 million.
Famous wild animals live in some countries of the world. For example, lions, tigers, bears, and so on. And I like elephants. But I have never ridden on an elephant. So I want to ride on an elephant.
Famous wild animals live in some countries of the world.
For example, lions, tigers, bears, and so on.
And I like elephants. But I have never ridden on an elephant.
So I want to ride on an elephant.
「<意見>の問題ではないのに"I think"を付ける」
[文例A]
So there are extremely many kinds of animals which are pets, I think.
(×)Today I think I would like to speak about the potential for long-range forecasting.
(○)I think I'd like to try an after-dinner liqueur.
I think I would [i'd] like to..."
(×)Today I think I would like to speak about the potential for long-range forecasting.
(×)For seasoning, I used salt, pepper, oregano, and so on.
(×)For example, lions, tigers, bears, and so on.
ここでもand so onは必要ない
(△)For example, there are lions, tigers, bears, and so on.
For example, in this essay, the most significant themes of jealousy, ambition, betrayal, and so on are discussed.
and so on という表現はカジュアルな表現なので、etc.(=et cetera)を使う
"the most significant themes"がいくつあるのかという疑問が聴き手にうかぶ
For example, in this essay, the most significant themes of jealousy, ambition, and betrayal are discussed.
"the most significant themes"は言い過ぎで、他にも有意義なテーマはある、という場合
For example, in this essay, the significant themes of jealousy, ambition, betrayal, etc. are discussed.
[例文3](添削例2)"such...as..."
For example, in this essay, such significant themes as jealousy, ambition, and betrayal are discussed.
For example, in this essay, a number of significant themes are discussed, including jealousy, ambition, and betrayal.
<these days 問題>
[文例A]
These days, the cats which live with people are more than 600 million.
Politicians these days lack core beliefs.
College professors these days seem more interested in doing their own research than in teaching students.
[文例A]
These days, the cats which live with people are more than 600 million.
these days の代わりに、recently, lately, today, at present, now を使ったほうが「大人の文章」になる
Today [At present; Now], more than 600 million casts live among humans.
More than 600 million cats now [at present; today] live among humans.
More than 600 million cats live among humans now [at present; today].
And I like elephants. But I have never ridden on an elephant. So I want to ride on an elephant.
I like elephants but I have never ridden on an elephant, and I want to ride on an elephant.
I like elephants, but I have never ridden on one, and I would like to do that.
[文例A]
However, cats are more importantthan dogs. Because cats are the most popular. These days, the cats which live with people are more than 600 million.
Cats are more important than dogs because they are more popular, and today more than 600 million of them live with people.
(△)there are extremely many kinds of animals which are pets, I think.
(○)Very many kinds of animals are kept as pets.…
(△)Many people keep pets. So there are extremely many kinds of animals which are pets, I think.
(○)People keep a variety of animals as pets.…
[文例A]
(×)the cats which live with people are more than 600 million.
(○)the number of cats which live with people is more than 600 million
(○)More than 600 million cats live with people.
Kyoto, which was the capital of Japan during the Heian period, is a wonderfurl city.
(○)Kyoto, the capital of Japan during the Heian period, is a wonderful cith.
Her younger brother Andrew is a professional mahjong player.
Her younger brother, Andrew, is a professional mahjong player.
[文例A]
(×)Many people keep pets. So there are extremely many kinds of animals which are pets, I think.
And dogs are so important. However, cats are more importantthan dogs. Because cats are the most popular. These days, the cats which live with people are more than 600 million.
While dogs certainly have a special importance among the many kinds of animals that people keep as pets, the cat is in fact the most popular of all,
with more than 600 million of them now living among humans.
(×)Famous wild animals live in some countries of the world. For example, lions, tigers, bears, and so on. And I like elephants. But I have never ridden on an elephant. So I want to ride on an elephant.
Among the many wild animals in the world, I particularyly like elephants, and sometime I would like to try riding on a tame one.

<because問題>
(×)Because I have played soccer since elementary school.
(○)My favorite sport is soccer because I have played it since elementary school.

My favorite sport is soccer. Because I have played soccer since elementary school.
But I am not good at soccer.
(○)My favorite sport is soccer because I have played soccer since elementary school.
(○)I have played soccer since elementary school, but I am not good at it.
(○)Though I have played soccer since elementary school, I am not very good at it, but,
even so, soccer is still my favorite sport.
Though I have played soccer since elementary school,
I am not very good at it,
I am not very good at it, but, even so, soccer is still my favorite sport.

Institutions fear recession's effect could be lasting
(The Boston Globe, July 06, 2014)

Waning ranks at law schools
Institutions fear recession's effect could be lasting
(The Boston Globe, July 06, 2014)
Years after the end of the recession, enrollment at the nation’s law schools continues to
plummet, a wrenching shift that has forced many schools to cut expenses and raised
concerns about the long-term financial prospects of some.
First-year enrollment for fall 2013 dropped 11 percent from the previous year, part of
a staggering 24 percent decline in just three years, according to the latest figures from
the American Bar Association. At 39,675 students, it was the smallest incoming class
since the 1970s, prompting fears that the legal education system has reached a crisis.
With a difficult job market making students increasingly hesitant to take on massive
student loan debt, nearly all law schools in Massachusetts ? one of the top areas in the
nation for legal education ? have seen enrollment suffer.

The persistent decline has forced many law schools to take drastic measures. Suffolk
University, where first-year enrollment fell 15 percent last year, recently offered
buyouts to all faculty with tenure or with renewable long-term contracts, and Western
New England University in Springfield has pared back its faculty among a number of
cost-cutting measures.
Boston University and Northeastern University have also seen enrollment fall, and
even highly regarded Harvard University had seen applications dip, before rallying
somewhat the past two years.

By all indications, the decline at many schools will continue this fall. Nationally, the
number of applicants for the incoming class has dropped nearly 8 percent from last
year, according to the Law School Admission Council.
The legal community had hoped that the downturn was largely cyclical and that
demand would rebound with the economy. But with enrollment showing little sign of
stabilizing, there is growing acceptance of a perhaps permanent shift.
“It’s a complete structural change, and it’s not going away,” said Richard P. Campbell, a
Boston lawyer and former president of the Massachusetts Bar Association who has
closely tracked the issue. “The end result is fewer graduates, and fewer law schools.”
A decline in applications forces schools to compete for a smaller pool of students,
making it harder to assemble a strong class. While top schools still have plenty of
applicants to choose from, allowing them to maintain enrollment, less selective schools
have little choice but to accept fewer students. Some schools may also have to lower
admission standards.
At New England Law School in Boston, first-year enrollment has dropped 40 percent
since fall 2010, while Western New England saw a 28 percent decline. In response,
New England Law School last year froze wages, offered buyouts to some faculty
members, and reduced its administrative staff. The dean, John O’Brien, took a
voluntary pay cut of 25 percent.

Western New England has also frozen tuition, now $39,000, for the next four academic
years, in an effort to attract more students.
“By reducing our expenses and developing new revenue, we are holding our own in a
tough market,” said Eric Gouvin, dean of the law school.
The University of Massachusetts Law School in Dartmouth, established in 2010 as the
state’s only public law school, attracted a class of 114 in 2011. That dropped to 71 in
2012, then rose slightly to 78 last year.
For decades, law school was seen as a springboard to a solid, often lucrative career. But
after the economic collapse in 2008, the legal job market slowed dramatically, leaving
many graduates out of work.
The class of 2011 faced the worst job market in years, with an overall employment rate
of just 85 percent, according to the National Association for Law Placement. That was
the lowest it had been since 1994.
During the recession, many law firms cut back on hiring, as companies took a hard line
on legal spending and began outsourcing more work, from research to drafting
contracts, legal specialists say. At the same time, advances in technology reduced the
need for junior associates and support staff.
“All of a sudden those jobs just weren’t there anymore,” said Campbell, who created a
bar association task force to study the problem. “The recession brought about a
structural change.”
The job crunch caused students to reassess their career plans, realizing the high price
of a law degree was an increasingly risky bet.
“Students are being cautious, having seen what happened,” said Vincent D. Rougeau,
dean of Boston College Law School, where first-year enrollment fell 14 percent over the
past three years, to 230 last year. “We’ve pretty much become accustomed to
declines.”
The job market has improved slightly in the past three years, but remains tight. Law
schools reported that 57 percent of 2013 graduates were employed in full-time
positions where bar passage was required, while 11 percent were unemployed or
underemployed.
Not long ago, many top students saw law school as a “natural progression” from their
college studies that would pay strong dividends in their careers, Rougeau said. But the
speed and scope of the current decline suggests those days may be gone, observers
say.

“There’s a pretty broad consensus that this is something completely different,” he said.
Like other law schools, BC has intensified recruiting efforts to attract students. The
school hosts more events for admitted students, and faculty members are more likely
to contact students directly.
“We’re not complacent,” he said. “We take very seriously the idea that students who
apply to us have choices, and it’s our responsibility to make the case for BC.”
Jeremy Paul, dean of Northeastern University’s law school, said declines in entry-level
hiring and flat funding for legal services programs have made jobs harder to come by,
and law schools are not expecting enrollment to rebound quickly.
“Nobody is acting as if there’s reason to believe there will suddenly be a large spike,”
he said.
In response, some schools are moving to prepare students for a legal world that is
being transformed by technology, in hopes of making graduates more marketable.
Andrew Perlman, a Suffolk law professor who directs the school’s Institute on Law
Practice Technology & Innovation, said schools need to shift their focus to emerging
areas, such as document automation and electronic discovery, which involves software
that searches documents for relevant information. “It used to be a lawyer went page
by page,” he said. “The real growth is not going to be in traditional settings.”
Suffolk created the institute, along with a new concentration in legal technology, to
train students in the type of technology that has eliminated so many traditional jobs.
“Instead of fighting it, lawyers can participate in it,” he said.
At Harvard, applications for the first-year class of about 600 are up significantly this
year, a promising sign and part of a national increase among students who score high
on the LSAT.
“The turn-around at the top of the pool shows that people who are serious about law
school are coming back,” said Jessica Soban, assistant dean and chief admissions officer
at Harvard Law School.
Campbell likened the decline in enrollment to a bubble, a natural outcome of law
schools growing too fast and charging too much. Now some lesser schools may not
survive the jarring transition, he said.
“Before, they had no incentive to cut back on the size of their classes, or the tuition
they charged,” he said. “They had free rein.”

Waning ranks at law schools
Institutions fear recession's effect could be lasting
(The Boston Globe, July 06, 2014)

Boston University and Northeastern University have also seen enrollment fall, and
even highly regarded Harvard University had seen applications dip, before rallying
somewhat the past two years.

number of applicants for the incoming class has dropped nearly 8 percent from last
year, according to the Law School Admission Council.
The dean, John O’Brien, took a
voluntary pay cut of 25 percent.

years, in an effort to attract more students.

The Band の3枚組のレコード"The Last Waltz"(1978)から。

■2.Up On Cripple Creek (Concert Version)The Band
"Up on Cripple Creek" is the fifth song on The Band's eponymous second album, The Band. It was released as an (edited) single on Capitol 2635 in November 1969 and reached #25 on the Billboard Hot 100.[1] "Up on Cripple Creek" was written by Band guitarist and principal songwriter Robbie Robertson, with drummer Levon Helm singing lead vocal.

4.Helpless (Concert Version) [feat. Neil Young]The Band
■5.Stage fright (Concert Version)The Band
"Stage Fright" is the title track of the Band's third album, Stage Fright. It features Rick Danko on lead vocals and was written by Robbie Robertson.[1] According to author Barney Hoskyns, Robertson originally intended it to be sung by Richard Manuel but it became clear that the song was better suited to Danko's "nervous, tremulous voice."[2]
Live performances of the song appear on Rock of Ages, released in 1972, and on Before the Flood, a live album of The Band's 1974 tour with Bob Dylan. It was also performed at The Last Waltz.[3] The studio version was released as a single in Denmark. The live version from Before the Flood was released as the B-side of Dylan's "Most Likely You Go Your Way (And I'll Go Mine)" single in 1974.

■1.The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down (Concert Version)The Band
"The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" is a song by The Band, recorded in 1969 and released on their self-titled second album. Joan Baez's cover of the song was a top-five chart hit in late 1971.
The song was written by Robbie Robertson. The lyrics tell of the last days of the American Civil War and the suffering of Southern whites, as evidenced by the lyric "the winter of '65".[1] Dixie is a nickname for the Southern Confederate states. Confederate soldier Virgil Caine "served on the Danville train" (the Richmond and Danville Railroad, a main supply line into the Confederate capital of Richmond, Virginia from Danville, Virginia, and by connection, the rest of the South). Union cavalry regularly tore up Confederate rail lines to prevent the movement of men and material to the front where Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia was besieged at the Siege of Petersburg. As part of the offensive campaign, Union Army General George Stoneman's forces "tore up the track again".

■1.The Shape I'm In (Concert Version)The Band
"The Shape I'm In" is a song by The Band, first released on their 1970 album Stage Fright. It was written by Robbie Robertson, who did little to disguise the fact that the song's sense of dread and dissolution was about Richard Manuel, the song's principal singer.[1] It became a regular feature in their concert repertoire, appearing on their live albums Rock of Ages, Before the Flood, and The Last Waltz. Author Neil Minturn described the song as "straightforward rock."[2] Along with "The Weight," it is one of the Band's songs most performed by other artists.[3] It has been recorded by Bo Diddley, The Good Brothers, The Mekons, The Pointer Sisters, She & Him, and Marty Stuart.
2.Down South In New Orleans (Concert Version) [feat. Bobby Charles]The Band
■3.Ophelia (Concert Version)The Band
from"Northern Lights ? Southern Cross". Northern Lights ? Southern Cross is the sixth studio album by Canadian-American rock group The Band released in 1975. It was the first album to be recorded at their new California studio, Shangri-La, and the first album of all new material since 1971's Cahoots. All eight songs are credited as compositions of guitarist Robbie Robertson.
4.Tura Lura Lural (That's An Irish Lullaby) [Concert Version] {feat. Van Morrison}The Band
Side Five
1.Caravan (Concert Version) [feat. Van Morrison]The Band
■2.Life Is a Carnival (Concert Version)The Band
"Life is a Carnival" is the opening track of The Band's fourth album, Cahoots. Written by Rick Danko, Levon Helm, and Robbie Robertson, the song features horn arrangements by New Orleans musician Allen Toussaint. The song is the only track from the Cahoots album included on the original releases of both the Rock of Ages album and The Last Waltz box set.
Musical notation for this song is printed on a wall behind Levon Helm's grave in Woodstock, New York.

The Weight" is a song originally by the Canadian-American group The Band that was released as Capitol Records single 2269 in 1968 and on the group's debut album Music from Big Pink. Written by Band member Robbie Robertson, the song is about a visitor's experiences in a town mentioned in the lyric's first line as Nazareth, from which the Scottish band Nazareth later took its name. "The Weight" has significantly influenced American popular music, having been listed as #41 on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Songs of All Time published in 2004.[1] Pitchfork Media named it the 13th best song of the Sixties,[2] and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame named it one of the 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll.[3] PBS, which broadcast performances of the song in "Ramble at the Ryman" (2011), "Austin City Limits" (2012),[4] and "Quick Hits" (2012),[5] describes it as "a masterpiece of Biblical allusions, enigmatic lines and iconic characters" and notes its enduring popularity as "an essential part of the American songbook."[5]

Lee's Army of Northern Virginia was besieged at the Siege of Petersburg. As part of the offensive campaign, Union Army General George Stoneman's forces "tore up the track again".

Side Four

The song is the only track from the Cahoots album included on the original releases of both the Rock of Ages album and The Last Waltz box set.
Musical notation for this song is printed on a wall behind Levon Helm's grave in Woodstock, New York.

▲4.The Last Waltz Suite: The Weight (feat. The Staples)The Band

ペーパーバック版での作者紹介に"from one of America's most original and startlingly imaginative writers"とありました。
