原付きバイクで久しぶりに広島アンデルセンへ行きました。
昼食用にサンドイッチを買いましたが、723円(内税)という価格で、
普段使いには手が出ない価格になってしまっていました。

「あの頃のレコード」は1970年代のロックを本当にアナログ・レコードで聴きなおすという企画で、
2022年からの年間テーマはザ・バンドの全アルバムの聴きなおしです。
本日は1970年代のロック・ライブ・アルバムを代表する"Rock of Ages"1972)から。
サイケな時代背景にはまったく似合わない、渋い色調をバックに仏像(おそらく)の印影のある顔面です。
タイトルはイギリスの四大賛美歌の1つである賛美歌260番『ちとせの岩よ(Rock of Ages)』(1775年)からと思われますが、
当然「岩」と「ロック」をひっかけていると思います。聖書『マタイ伝』などには、永遠のよりどころとしての神が「the Rock of Ages(千歳の岩)」として表現されているようで、
スタジオ・アルバム制作がうまくいかなかったバンドの原点回帰のライブに相応しいタイトルです。
Side One 1.はロビー・ロバートソンの前口上。通常のライブと違って、アラン・ツゥーサンのアレンジによるホーン・セクションが加わっているためメンバーの紹介をしています。
本アルバムでは時間の関係上、ライブの曲順にはなっていなくて、バンド→バンド+ホーン・セクションの音の高揚感は失われていますが、圧巻のライブです。
Side One 2. "Don't Do It"は映画『ラスト・ワルツ』でも最初に演奏される、モータウンのマーヴィン・ゲイの64年のカヴァー。
Side One 3. "King Harvest (Has Surely Come)"(1969)はロビー・ロバートソンの曲。
セカンドアルバムのA面1曲目。
Side One 4. "Caledonia Mission"はファースト・アルバムのA面4曲目。
Side One 5. "Get Up Jake"はセカンド・アルバム"The Band"からのアウトテイク。バンド自体は気に入っていたのか、コンサートでは歌われ、
73年には"Moondog Matinee"からのシングル"Ain't Got No HOme"のB面にオリジナルのモノ録音盤を収録。
Side One 6. "The W.S. Walcott Medicine Show"は1970年の"Stage Fright"からの曲。リヴォン・ヘルムの幼少時代(アーカンサス)のパフォーマンスからの発想だそうです。
